Inclusion ratio based estimator for the mean length of the boolean line segment model with an application to nanocrystalline cellulose
2014
A novel estimator for estimating the mean length of fibres is proposed for censored data observed in square shaped windows. Instead of observing the fibre lengths, we observe the ratio between the intensity estimates of minus-sampling and plus-sampling. It is well-known that both intensity estimators are biased. In the current work, we derive the ratio of these biases as a function of the mean length assuming a Boolean line segment model with exponentially distributed lengths and uniformly distributed directions. Having the observed ratio of the intensity estimators, the inverse of the derived function is suggested as a new estimator for the mean length. For this estimator, an approximation…
A non-destructive X-ray microtomography approach for measuring fibre length in short-fibre composites
2012
An improved method based on X-ray microtomography is developed for estimating fibre length distribution of short-fibre composite materials. In particular, a new method is proposed for correcting th ...
On the measurement of bubble size distribution in gas–liquid contactors via light sheet and image analysis
2010
Abstract Particle image velocimetry techniques coupled with advanced image processing tools are receiving an increasing interest for measuring flow quantities and local bubble-size distributions in gas–liquid mechanically agitated vessels. When trying to analyze image information the problem arises that bubble sizes are generally underestimated, due to the fact that the laser sheet used for lighting the system randomly cuts bubbles over non-diametrical planes, leading to an apparent bubble size distribution even in the ideal case of single sized bubbles. Clearly in the case of bubbles with a size distribution the experimental information obtained is affected by the superposition of effects.…
Composition, hydrogen bonding and viscoelastic properties correlation for ethylene/α,ω-alkenol copolymers
2022
The influence of composition of ethylene/α,ω-alkenol (α,ω-alkenol = 10-undecen-1-ol or 9-decen-1-ol) copolymers on comonomer distribution and dynamic rheological properties were investigated. Thermal fractionation revealed formation of multiple peaks corresponding to the presence of methylene sequences of different length in copolymers. The share of fraction with shorter methylene sequence increased with increasing comonomer content. It turned out that viscoelastic behavior of ethylene/α,ω-alkenol copolymers was dependent on comonomer content incorporated into the polymer chain. The relaxation time of reptation increased with increasing comonomer content what confirmed that comonomer units …
Densité et mobilité des poissons sous la glace, sur une zone de pêche à la senne de deux lacs finlandais, par écho-intégration.
2000
The density and movements of fish under ice were studied with single-beam mobile surveys and fixed location split-beam surveys, as well as exploratory fishing in winter-seining areas of two shallow Finnish lakes during winter 1999. Fish schooled near the bottom during the day but the schools dispersed and fish ascended at night. Single and split-beam target strength distributions corresponded fairly closely with the length distribution of seine catch samples. Estimated fish densities were greater at night than in daylight. The swimming speed of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) was 0.18 m·s -1 in daylight and 0.36 m·s -1 at night. The corresponding figures for vendace (Coregonus albula) were 0.11-0…
